Mis’ Rubin’s Seasonings is the continuation of one couple’s American Dream.
Rubin and Julia Hanan arrived in Montgomery, Alabama, in the early 1920’s ready to make a new life for themselves. As emigrants from Greece, it took time for them to adjust to life in the States.
One way they incorporated their heritage into their business was through food. After starting a meat market called “Penny Profit,” the couple at first struggled to differentiate themselves from larger stores in the area. Soon, they found the solution: the savory, mouthwatering seasonings Julia invented. Ultimately, her unique spice blends were what drew local business.
Customers raved about the fantastic seasoning that came with each steak purchased from Penny Profit. Favored customers recall their pleasure upon receiving a little extra of the rub. Before long, the spices became affectionately known as Mis’ Rubin’s seasonings.
When Penny Profit closed its doors, locals were afraid they would lose what had become a beloved Montgomery tradition. Black Magic and White Magic, as the seasonings were called, were in high demand. The recipes were passed down to family, but did not become available until recently.
Since then, their seasonings have earned several awards, including Taste of the South Magazine’s Taste 50 List. In recognition of the role Penny Profit played in Montgomery history, Mis’ Rubin’s Seasonings are featured in the gift shops of the Governor’s Mansion and the State Capitol.
Robert Landers is now the proud owner of Mis’ Rubin’s Seasonings. He and his wife, Ashley, are dedicated to making the magic available to all and keeping the tradition alive.
Now everyone, not just Montgomery locals, can make “the best steaks this side of heaven.”

In, 1935 Julia and Rubin Hanan started selling steaks slathered in Black Magic. Affectionately known as Mis’ Rubin’s Seasoninings, their steak rub became a cornerstone of the community. For decades, Penny Profit was the only store in the world that sold Black Magic. Now, these bottles let you in on a local secret to the best grilled meats in the world, or, as Julia used to say, “the best steaks this side of heaven.”
Black Magic is a savory dry rub that is made for the grill. The unique spice blend delivers it’s one of a kind taste by enhancing the natural flavors of meat. Our spices work their magic best when applied generously (don’t be shy, you won’t overdo it) to any of your cook out favorites like steak, ribs, burgers, pork, and wild game.
Ingredients: Salt, Dehydrated Onion, Soy Flour, Spices, Garlic, Activated Charcoal Powder (Food Grade -made from Coconut Husk) Dextrose, Papain (tenderizer from Papaya), less than 2% tri-calcium phosphate (calcium salt) to prevent caking.
